Secrets Beyond Tejo is an independent project, made with care. Behind it is one person, Vasco, who would rather show you Beja the way a friend would than narrate it like a guidebook.
I’m Vasco.
My grandfather was an archaeologist and a history professor, and my mother followed him into it. So I have always known that history is not something that belongs in a textbook. It is something we live every day, and to this day I cannot walk past an old wall without wanting to know who built it, and why.
Later, I went to study in Rome, where I was fortunate enough to live in Trastevere and to have professors who showed us the city and taught us on the sites themselves. We would stop on a street I had walked down dozens of times, they would point at something I had never noticed, and the street was never the same afterwards.
I loved the way they brought Roman culture to life, and Italian culture with it. I love the way they care about their history and their heritage. I want Portugal to have that same experience: for me, for other Portuguese people, and for everyone who comes to see us. So that you can leave knowing this country from the inside.

Beja was Pax Iulia, one of the most important towns of Roman Lusitania, a name the centuries wore down through Paca and Baja into the Beja of today. The city descends in layers beneath your feet: medieval, Moorish, Visigothic, Roman, and older still. You can still find the evidence if you know where to stand — a worn threshold, a reused stone in a much later wall, the shape of an old road hiding inside a modern one.
My favourite moment of the whole day is small: I stop on an ordinary street, point at something most people have walked past a thousand times, and watch it change in front of you. That’s the feeling I’m chasing: not facts memorised, but a place that suddenly reads differently.
Depth over volume, every time
I’m not interested in rushing people through Beja. I’d rather spend the day with travellers who notice the small things, take their time over lunch, and ask questions along the way. If that sounds like you, we’ll get along.

The exact meeting point is confirmed after booking. It’s a full day, at your rhythm, and we agree the meeting time once the date is set.
No prepayment for date requests. Children (0–12) €10, young people (13–18) €20, adults (19–67) €45 and seniors (68–99) €30 per person. Lunch is paid separately.
